A sketch or drawing, nothing special as long as we have the relevant information.
Lengths of each wall, windows doors and ceiling height.
A typical list as follows:
  • Lengths of all walls so it gives you a replica of what you have, for example not just do an L shaped corner where the kitchen is going to be , include the whole room sizing.
  • Window and door sizes and more importantly their distances form the corners.
  • Boiler positions, the height width and distance from ground will help to place a boiler cabinet in the right place
  • Appliances that are being used in the kitchen

Helpful planning tips . . . .
How to measure your kitchen
Map out your room layout on graph paper using metric measurements.. We find it best practice to work in a clockwork direction making note of which are external walls.
Take a look at the image below as an example.
Ceiling and floor
Take measurements from the ceiling to the floor and try different areas of the room as the ceiling can fluctuate, its always best to go with the lowest height. For the width across the walls, measure along the floor, half way up the wall and near the ceiling. For the ceiling, measure at three points across the wall from the floor to the ceiling. It's a good idea to note down the measurements for each wall individually and name them, for example 'wall one, wall two etc
Windows and doors
Measure width, height, height from floor and distance from corners. measurements to include any architrave.
Measure width, height, depth of the boiler, then measure the distance from the corner and from the ground to the bottom of the boiler, if you are considering boxing in the pipes below the boiler if there any then indicate this so we can include some material in the plan for you.
When designing islands if you are including a hob, make sure you have adequate extraction, we prefer ceiling extractors, they work well, island hoods you tend to knock your head on. Allow plenty of drawers as this is where you generally prep the food. Put your sockets underneath the overhangs where you sit, that way they don't get any liquids on them and they keep the worktops looking more spacious. If you are considering lighting have a look at extrusion under the seating area where it has a very elegant effect (see our gallery for plenty of examples)
Kitchen planning checklist
  • Allow for door clearances and any possible corner clashing, you can always increase a corner post size to help.
  • Allow for side panels you need to allow for thickness of panels or fillers.
  • Make sure you allow for enough clearance between hob and extractor, the general rule is gas hob allow 750mm and electric 650mm.
  • Allow space for the cornice when considering the height of your units
  • Where a dishwasher is opposite another base unit make sure you can have the door open and still be able to walk past
  • When planning take into consideration service pipes going behind appliances as some are very restrictive unless you drop them to floor level.
  • When calculating handles allow one per door/drawer but 800mm wide and above allow two per frontal.
  • Electrics hobs and most single ovens and double ovens need a direct radial feed to the consumer unit, compact ovens tend to be 13amp plugin. Think about where you want socket points and consider built in usb connections.
  • When looking at corner storage, we find le mans works perfectly at gaining access, despite what you think if you put no storage in that void in the corner becomes redundant as you cannot access it easily, there are plenty on the market to choose from, just take note their weight capacities.
  • Worktops are key to any kitchen functioning with ease and practicality, so where you can have runs with as little interference where possible.
